RHchildJust Homes East London is a new charity. It has come together as a result of leaders of a few key churches and charities in Newham seeing, through their daily work, how many people are living in overcrowded and bad housing conditions. It has grown out of First Fruit, a family of social enterprises and charities providing accommodation and work for homeless, unemployed and other marginalised people since 1997. Just Homes has taken on the housing arm of First Fruit including its staff and properties.

Just Homes currently manages six properties housing over 40 people including families, single homeless, single mothers, refugees, ex-offenders and others. There are currently 5 bedrooms for those not entitled to benefits.

The turnover of the company is at present £280,000 with some money provided by the government's  Supporting People programme as well as rents and housing benefit. The capital value of the properties managed is £2.5 / 3 million.

Some of the groups that Just Homes works with:
  • Homeless and those at risk of being homeless
  • Those living in poor or overcrowded housing conditions
  • Young offenders newly released from prison
  • Key workers whose work does not fall within the statutory definition.

Just Homes is not going to solve all Newham’s housing problems. But working with the local authority, housing associations, investors, landlords, homeowners, churches, agencies and those in housing need it will seek to provide a flexible, good quality, supportive and compassionate answer to some of that need.

Just Homes is not a registered social landlord and is therefore not subject to the eligibility criteria for the tenants it houses.
